This film is an ink painting animated movie produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1988. It tells the story of an old guqin master who falls ill at an abandoned village riverside on his way home. A young fisherman offers the old man a place to rest in his thatched cottage, which brings the elder comfort. The next day, the old man's health recovers, and he takes out the guqin to play a tune, drawing the boy to his side. Eager to learn, the boy shows great enthusiasm, and the old man patiently teaches him, forming a master-disciple bond. As autumn passes and spring arrives, the boy's skills improve greatly, much to the old man's joy. However, alongside this joy, the old man contemplates how to help his disciple reach greater heights. One day, he happens to witness a young eagle soaring independently from its mother, which enlightens him. Therefore, he takes the boy on a journey by boat, ascending mountains after crossing rivers, surrounded by majestic nature that captivates the boy. Upon parting, the old guqin master gifts his beloved guqin to the boy and walks alone towards the mountain summit among the white clouds. The boy gazes at the figure of his beloved teacher fading into the vast wilderness, suddenly inspired, and sits cross-legged on a cliff, caressing the strings of the guqin to play the music from his heart, expressing his admiration for life, while the melodious sound echoes in the mountains. The characters and scene designs in this film were contributed by renowned Chinese painting masters Wu Shanming and Zhuo Hejun, establishing a solid foundation for the film's artistry. Furthermore, "Mountain and Water Affection" is recognized as an unparalleled example of ink painting animation, its poetic quality and ethereal imagery achieving a realm of harmony between humanity and nature.
