Philip (played by Gregory Peck) is a journalist who arrives in New York City with his son Tommy (played by Dean Stockwell) and mother (played by Anne Revere), full of ambition to make a significant impact. His boss assigns him a task to write a series of articles about the anti-Semitism that exists in America. To better understand the situation, Philip decides to pretend to be Jewish to experience life and the challenges faced by Jewish people. However, Philip does not foresee that this action creates a rift between him and his girlfriend Kathy (played by Dorothy McGuire), while his son faces bullying and ostracism from his peers because of his father's false identity. After enduring numerous setbacks and difficulties, Philip excels at completing his assignment, yet he feels anything but at ease inside.
