The scholar Yang Yuwei (played by Xing Minshan) is dedicated to studying in an abandoned room, where he encounters the beautiful ghost Lian Suo (played by Fu Yiwei). As feelings develop between the human and the ghost, Yuwei learns that the White Impermanence from the underworld wants to take Lian Suo as his concubine. Yuwei foils this plan and brings Lian Suo back to his home. Lian's father (played by Han Tingqi) looks down upon the lowly-status Yuwei and refuses to betroth his daughter to him.
