The film tells the 25-year family chronicle of the prestigious Sakurada family from the defeat of Japan in 1946 until the production of the film in 1971. The protagonist, Manshu-otoko, is the eldest grandson of the family. His father committed suicide after the defeat, and his mother, a nurse, has never been accepted by the family. His grandfather, Ichin, was a high-ranking government official before and during the war and is the ruler of the family. His uncle, Terumichi, is Ichin's illegitimate son. Additionally, a variety of people live in this large family. This family is a noble household that was not crushed by defeat; under the rule of a lecherous patriarch, they shifted from the right wing before the war to the left wing. The illegitimate child marries a communist. The family is plagued by mutual exclusion and extortion between the left and right factions; however, due to blood ties, they are dependent on each other and share a fate of coexistence and demise, making it a microcosm of postwar Japanese historical society. All the people living here, regardless of political beliefs or class consciousness, face dire outcomes and live in a state of despair. The film is filled with a horrific atmosphere of divine retribution, as characters continuously die, either from misfortunes or intentional suicides. The postwar Japanese historical mentality, social conditions, and political struggles are thus regretfully reflected in the film.
