In May 1935, during the Long March, the Red Army crossed the Jinsha River and entered the Liangshan area of Sichuan. This region is home to a concentration of ethnic minorities. In an effort to eliminate the Red Army, Chiang Kai-shek mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops in an attempt to encircle the Red Army south of the Dadu River. To facilitate smooth progress, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China dispatched Liu Bocheng and Nie Rongzhen to lead the Red Army's advance party to pave the way for the main forces. Along the way, the advance party fought bravely while promoting the party's ethnic policies. The Liangshan area had long been subjected to brutal oppression by the reactionary Kuomintang, resulting in deep ethnic divisions among the Yi people. After the Red Army entered the Yi area, the Yi masses, misled and unaware of the truth, adopted a policy of obstruction against the Red Army. The Red Army strictly adhered to the party's ethnic policies, and despite facing various difficulties and obstacles, they refused to open fire on their suffering Yi compatriots. All of this was witnessed by the Yi people, and the leader, Xiao Yedan, was deeply moved. They publicly declared their commitment and resolved to form an alliance with the military to resist the reactionary Kuomintang together. At that time, the Red Army's Chief of Staff Liu Bocheng and Xiao Yedan made a blood oath of alliance at Yi Hai, and the advance party successfully completed its mission, with the Yi people sending the Red Army off on a new journey.
