Before and after the Xinhai Revolution, the fate of Xianglin Sao (played by Bai Yang), who lived in a mountain village in eastern Zhejiang, was tragic. Her husband, Xianglin, died young, and the debt from his coffin kept piling up, making life very difficult for the family. Desperate, her mother-in-law arranged for her second son, A Gen, to get married to pay off debts, and under the coercion of the matchmaker Wei Laoer (played by Guan Zongxiang), she even secretly sold her daughter-in-law to He Lao Liu (played by Wei Heling). A Gen told his sister-in-law about this, and Xianglin Sao, filled with sorrow, fled that very night to work at the home of Master Lu Si in Luzhen. Not long after, her mother-in-law came to take her back. The woman who was forced into marriage nearly caused a tragedy, but fortunately, He Lao Liu was kind-hearted and treated her well. The birth of her son, A Mao, allowed Xianglin Sao to feel a bit of the precious happiness of being alive. However, the good times were short-lived, and the deaths of her husband and son completely pushed Xianglin Sao's life to rock bottom... This film is adapted from the famous novel of the same name by Chinese literary figure Lu Xun.
