Suzu (voiced by Reina Nounen) is a slow and dreamy girl whose greatest hobby is painting. As she reaches the marrying age, Suzu is sent to Kure by her parents to marry a man named Shusaku Houjou (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya), becoming a bride in the Houjou family. Rei (voiced by Minako Naka), Shusaku's sister, returns to her parents' house with her daughter Harumi (voiced by Natsuki Inaba). Unlike the gentle and obedient Suzu, Rei has a bold and fiery personality. Although she often feels dissatisfied with the meek Suzu, the two actually share a strong bond. As war begins, more and more fighter planes fly over the sky, and the piercing sound of air raid sirens often shatters the night's tranquility, casting the shadow of war over the Houjou family's life. During an air raid, Harumi tragically loses her life, and Suzu loses her right hand, making it impossible for her to paint. However, despite such a cruel situation, the family does not give up their desire to survive.
