Nan Sword Ding Menghao (Lu Ping) claims to be the number one sword in the world, and many swordsmen in the martial world have been injured under his blade. However, one day, Ding unexpectedly loses to the passing odd Daoist Yan Gan; to fulfill a promise, he submits to the Daoist's harsh training for three years. During this time, Ding endures great suffering, and in front of the giant rock at the entrance of the sculpture mountain, he surprisingly learns to be a stone mason. This is actually the Daoist sharpening his spirit while secretly teaching him. At the end of the three years, the Daoist gives him parting words, stating that if he wishes to live, he must first learn to die.
