Astrophysicists Kurt Siegel and Gwen Armstrong, along with flight officer Mara Prichard, discover a peculiar meteorite that, after research and calculations, turns out to be fragments of an asteroid. Data analysis indicates that the asteroid Phathon, approximately two feet in diameter, will be hidden within the ongoing meteor shower storm and will impact Earth in two hours. Gwen and the others realize that they must stop the meteor shower storm while also preventing the asteroid's collision. Meanwhile, to stop the already monitored meteor shower storm, countries around the globe are uniting to initiate a level 5 response—launching all nuclear missiles to prevent the meteor storm from hitting Earth outside the atmosphere. However, according to Gwen and the others' analysis, if all nuclear missiles are launched to stop the meteor storm, the most favorable measures to stop the asteroid from colliding with Earth will be lost, putting humanity at risk of extinction. They must persuade the supreme commander to allocate half of the nuclear missiles to stopping the meteor storm and the other half to preventing the asteroid. But when they finally manage to convince the commander to change the level 5 response deployment after much struggle, most of the nuclear missiles have already been lost. Time is running out. Gwen and the team can only try to utilize the still-under-research Breiberg effect for a final effort...
