In the 19th century, the British Empire dominates the seas, with Queen Victoria (voiced by Imelda Staunton) reigning with arrogance. However, she is infuriated by the rampant pirates. Among these outlaws, the pirate captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) appears rather pathetic, leading a crew of the old, weak, and sickly. Though spirited when they raid, they always end up with nothing. One day, on Blood Island, they are mocked by industry experts Black Bellamy (voiced by Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (voiced by Salma Hayek). To prove his worth and win the annual Pirate of the Year award, the captain begins to plunder and unexpectedly meets biologist Charles Darwin (voiced by David Tennant). Darwin discovers that the captain's pet is an extinct dodo bird. He sweet-talks the captain into attending the annual Scientist competition in London, and the captain drifts further away from his pirate path... This film is the first 3D stop-motion animated film by British studio Aardman.
