Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) is an ordinary high school student who faces a difficult choice after witnessing a prank but not wanting to betray his friend — to confess or face expulsion from school. Meanwhile, Frank (Al Pacino) is a retired army officer who, after unexpectedly going blind, has seen his life fall from the heights of glory to the depths of despair. Since their lives intersect, the turning point of fate slowly becomes clear. Frank plans to end his meaningless life, and with Charlie's company, he indulges in one last grand adventure. He eats the finest meals, buys flashy cars, speeds down narrow streets, stays in a luxurious suite, follows the alluring scent of strange women, and dances an elegant and sensual tango... After a moment of ecstatic madness, he points a gun at his own head. However, Charlie's desperate pleas change everything, and a glimmer of hope begins to rise in the old man's heart; they develop a bond as deep as father and son. Frank delivers an impassioned speech in the school auditorium, saving Charlie's future and mocking the hypocrisy of the school. The two are reborn in their mutual encouragement.
