The story takes place in Czechoslovakia in 1983, where Maria (played by Zuzana Maurery) is a new teacher at a primary school. Her extremely strict style and iron-fisted methods of governing the students have already caused a lot of trouble soon after she arrived at the school. Maria is very harsh with her students, even resorting to corporal punishment. She unabashedly expresses her emotions, completely disregarding her identity as a teacher, simply because she has a strong background and flexible social skills. Under Maria's influence, a sensational suicide incident among the students prompts the principal to decide that he can no longer ignore her. He joins forces with the parents' committee in an attempt to restrain Maria's power. But clearly, the kind yet somewhat weak principal is no match for Maria.
