Francis Ford Coppola's "Metropolis" is adapted from the ancient Roman historical work "The Catilinarian Conspiracy," focusing on a fantastical New York set in an anachronistic era between ancient Rome and the roaring 1920s, while still reflecting the modern face of New York. The city is on the brink of disaster, with two factions having differing views on its future: Mayor Cicero, a conservative figure with traditional views on city development, and an innovative architect named Catiline who hopes to establish a utopia in the city. Caught between these two powerful figures is a young woman, Julia, the mayor's daughter, who has fallen in love with Catiline. The origins of the "Metropolis" project can be traced back to 1984. At that time, Coppola wrote nearly 400 pages of script, but due to the bankruptcy of his production company, American Zoetrope, the film's pre-production fell into distress. In 2001, Coppola revived the project, but during the filming of footage in New York, the events of 9/11 deterred investors from a story about a disaster-stricken New York. In recent years, people had given up hope, believing Coppola would not make the film… but he has returned. When seeing actors in lavish costumes on set photos, people still felt like it was a dream: did this really happen? Will the utopian Metropolis be realized in our dimension where adaptations reign? Filming began in November 2022 and is expected to continue until March 2023, barring any setbacks. Additionally, there will be a year for post-production, including editing and visual effects, so the film is anticipated to be released in 2024. Most of the scenes will be shot in a special effects studio in Georgia. This environment is relatively easy for the aging Coppola, allowing us to see his long-held dream of working in a studio take root in a new generation. The screenplay for "Metropolis" has been refined for nearly 40 years, and given its maturity, we are filled with hope. The political ambitions it contains will also change Hollywood. What style will Coppola employ for this film? Will it be the darkness, solemnity, and ritual of "The Godfather" trilogy? Or the smooth, colorful, and thrilling style of "The Conversation"? Coppola believes "Metropolis" will be the culmination of all his stylistic works.
