This film is adapted from Henry James's novella "The Turn of the Screw." In the late 19th century, the beautiful governess Miss Giddens (played by Deborah Kerr) arrives at a country estate to care for her employer's niece Flora (Pamela Franklin) and nephew Miles (Martin Stephens). Soon, Miss Giddens begins to see strange apparitions, as if the house is haunted by ghosts, and the children appear to be possessed by demons, expressing or performing disturbingly mature and bizarre actions. The housekeeper Mrs. Grose (Megs Jenkins) reveals to her that all of this may be related to the underground romance of a deceased former governess and the estate's steward. Miss Giddens becomes determined to rescue the children from the devil's control, but could the specters she sees be merely her own hallucinations? The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and received two nominations for Best British Film and Best Film from the British Film Institute.
