Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) is a 10-year-old boy who is just like any other child his age, except for the huge space helmet he wears. Underneath the helmet hides Auggie's scarred face from numerous surgeries, which not only perfectly conceals his fragile and insecure inner self but also successfully prevents his appearance from frightening other children. Auggie has never attended school; all his knowledge has been taught to him by his mother Isabel (Julia Roberts) at home. However, Isabel gradually feels that home schooling cannot meet Auggie's developmental needs. Besides learning academic knowledge, Auggie also needs to learn how to communicate with people other than his family. After much worry, Isabel enrolls Auggie in a public school, where he will face the challenges he must overcome in life.
