In the early autumn of 1989 in Berlin, William Bauelette's family is celebrating his 90th birthday. William was once a resistance fighter and, having traveled abroad, firmly believes in Stalinism. Despite the looming turmoil in the outside world, his wife Charlotte is still managing the birthday party, maintaining the tranquility of the home. However, William's young grandson Sasha has gone missing at this critical moment—no one could have imagined that Sasha escaped to West Berlin just days earlier. The film gradually unfolds from the perspective of Sasha's father, historian Kurt, starting with the disintegration of a family to depict the "twilight of doom" at the end of the East German regime in the late 1980s.
