In October 1942, Shella (played by Paolo Briguglia), a philosophy and literature student, arrives as a volunteer to the Italian troops in North Africa stationed in Egypt to prove his bravery. Lieutenant Fiore, the commander of the garrison, becomes despondent and irritable due to the prolonged absence of relief troops. Shella is assigned to the squad of Sergeant Rizzo (played by Pierfrancesco Favino), and like his comrades, Shella's task is to hold the Italian army's defensive line in the vast desert amidst the random shelling from the British forces. This is a war, but it is also a fierce competition for survival; the Italian troops lack supplies, and what is more terrifying than artillery fire is the threat of disease and dehydration. Living in constant fear of British attacks, Shella and Rizzo discover fallen Italian soldiers during a scouting mission, making the British offensive feel increasingly imminent…
