In the spring of 1946, the Northeast Democratic United Army led by the Communist Party of China engaged in fierce battles with the Nationalist army in Siping, Jilin. A stream of wounded soldiers withdrawn from the front lines died in the rear due to the lack of timely medical care. Faced with the significant troop reductions caused by untimely treatment, Sun Yizhi, then the Minister of Health of the Northeast Democratic United Army, was permitted by Commander Huang Kecheng to establish a frontline field hospital in an abandoned church where the corps command was located. The field hospital built in the church was relatively safe, but the lack of medical supplies and personnel, especially surgeons, became a pressing issue in the face of numerous wounded. After consulting with his superiors, Sun Yizhi decided to recruit doctors from the captured Nationalist personnel. His decision faced opposition from Hospital Director Tang and Doctor Liu, but despite their objections, a group of Nationalist doctors, including Shi Jian and Zeng Sanmin, were incorporated into the field hospital under Sun Yizhi's insistence. Once initial concerns were alleviated by Sun Yizhi's sincerity, Shi Jian, Zeng Sanmin, and others stepped up to the operating table, alleviating the shortage of hospital doctors and saving many wounded soldiers. However, problems soon arose. During the rescue of a heroic soldier brought down from the front lines, who was severely injured, improper bleeding control resulted in the soldier's death on the spot. Director Tang and Doctor Liu, who had already distrusted the Nationalist doctors appointed by Sun Yizhi, had their distrust deepened after the death under Shi Jian's scalpel, leading to Shi Jian's overnight escape. Upon learning of Shi Jian's escape, Sun Yizhi risked entering enemy territory to pursue him overnight, forgiving him and renewing his trust. This trust from Sun Yizhi, who stood by the doctors' side, particularly moved the captured Nationalist doctors, including Shi Jian, especially when Sun Yizhi chose to give a blood transfusion to a wounded Nationalist soldier over assisting his own wife who was in labor, leading to her tragic death during childbirth. This motivated Shi Jian and others to work harder and devote themselves to saving the wounded. The battles continued, and the number of wounded increased. To tackle the issue of malnutrition among the injured, Sun Yizhi forcefully requisitioned a truckload of supplies from the logistics department, and to ensure timely evacuations from the front lines, he organized all hospital personnel to rush into the frontline under heavy fire to rescue the wounded. Among them was Shi Jian, who volunteered for the task. As the weather suddenly turned cold, Shi Jian, moved by Sun Yizhi's leadership, produced his long-developed secret formula to address the frostbite among the injured. After the field hospital received orders to evacuate Siping, Shi Jian did not wait for the Nationalist army entering the city but instead followed Sun Yizhi into the rising sun.
