Michael (played by Michael Fuith) is an extremely reclusive man who lives alone. He dislikes communicating with coworkers at work, refuses to interact with neighbors at home, and has distant relationships with his mother and brother. The reason is that he does not want anyone to discover the secret in his house – a boy named Wolfgang (played by David Rauchenberger) is being held captive in the basement. This ten-year-old boy was kidnapped and brought home by Michael. He meets the boy's basic needs, allows him some time to watch TV for entertainment, and permits him to write letters to his biological parents every day, always deceiving him into believing that the letters have been sent but that his parents are simply ignoring him. On the surface, it appears that Michael is a strict father figure for Wolfgang, but the truth gradually emerges: he also requires the boy to satisfy his sexual needs. Life goes on quietly, but Michael seems to develop a bigger appetite and plans to capture another child, which ultimately fails. Wolfgang feels lonely and discovers that the letters were never sent. In despair, he devises an escape plan, which leads him into an even greater predicament...
