Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler), the waterboy for the football team, has social interaction difficulties and is often bullied by his teammates. Coach Red believes he hinders the players' training and fires him. Unemployed, Bobby cannot leave the waterboy job he has held for 18 years and joins a struggling college team called "Mud Dogs" without pay. Coach Klein discovers that Bobby possesses extraordinary tackling abilities when he's angry, and decides to recruit him. Bobby's mother (Kathy Bates) worries about him and opposes any plans for him to leave her side, especially with the arrival of his childhood friend, troubled girl Vicki (Fairuza Balk), which further concerns her. Keeping his involvement with the team a secret from his mother, Bobby helps the team win repeatedly and ultimately finds love and true recognition from others.
