Cairo in 1949. Archaeologist and former wartime priest Merrin (Stellan Skarsgård) receives a job to go to Kenya to participate in the excavation of a fifth-century church. The client is aware of Merrin's expertise in religious iconography and asks him to retrieve a Sumerian-style demon statue. Upon arriving in Kenya and meeting with a priest sent by the Vatican, Merrin learns that the Vatican knows nothing about this fifth-century church, which is itself riddled with mysteries. Through the introduction of the excavation team's doctor, Sarah (Izabella Scorupco), Merrin discovers that the entire excavation process is filled with eerie phenomena, as the archaeologist Besson goes mad during the dig, and the drawings he creates closely resemble the demon statue Merrin has seen. Meanwhile, children in the excavation camp exhibit symptoms of being "touched by the demon," convulsing but able to control coyotes. Merrin and the others seem to be falling deeper into the curse of the demon...
