This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by John Williams, telling the story of a young man named Andrews who dropped out of Harvard in 1873. Influenced by the natural philosophies of Emerson and Thoreau, he arrives in Butcher's Crossing with an impulse to seek beauty, hope, and vitality. He follows the hunter Miller (played by Cage) and two others (the skinner Schneider and the camp handyman Charlie Hoge) into the Colorado mountains to hunt buffalo. Each of them embarks on this uncertain journey with different purposes and ideas. They face numerous hardships and lose one person’s life before returning to Butcher's Crossing, where everything has changed drastically.
