Eleni (Ingrid Bergman) is an American aristocrat living in Rome, leading a life of privilege, detached from the world. She is unaware of and uninterested in what is happening outside; all her energy is focused on her own household. What Eleni did not expect was that her son, Mike (Sandro Franchina), would choose to commit suicide. Mike's death hits Eleni like a cold bucket of water, awakening her from her complacency. After the pain of losing her son subsides, Eleni decides to dedicate herself to charity, bringing her closer to the poor and providing them with tangible help. These actions bring her spiritual solace; she even decides to move out of her house to live among some destitute prostitutes. Eleni's actions soon anger her husband.
