Set in the late Edo period's longhouse slums, this film depicts the love story between two young dung collectors and the daughter of a fallen samurai family. With its black-and-white tones, academy ratio, and serialized narrative style, the director returns to the classics with a radical stance, using his expertise in comedy to portray the lives of the lower classes while continually uncovering the brilliance of humanity. Haruno Kuroki, who won the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival and has three times been awarded Best Supporting Actress by the Japanese Academy, perfectly embodies the voiceless protagonist Ajiku through her silent performance, contributing another outstanding portrayal.
