During a time when militarism was rampant, a fishing boat named "Bokowa Maru" was tossed about in the turbulent seas of the Kamchatka Peninsula, carrying dozens of crab workers. The boat was owned by a food company that specialized in crab meat canning, and it engaged in frenzied catching and production in the name of the empire. The crab workers came from various backgrounds, but all were from impoverished families. For a meager wage, they had to endure high-intensity labor every day, while also facing punishments and beatings from the devilish foreman, Asakawa (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima). The crab workers were caught in a desperate situation, feeling trapped in despair and hopelessness that spread unchecked within the "Bokowa Maru." By chance, crab worker Shinjō (played by Ryūhei Matsuda) and Shiota (played by Hirofumi Arai) boarded a Russian ship, where they were inspired by the atmosphere of freedom and joy on board. Upon returning to the "Bokowa Maru," Shinjō rallied everyone to rise up against the exploitation of the capitalists… This film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Japanese communist writer Takiji Kobayashi.
