During the late Qing dynasty, as war raged and the people suffered, the eldest brother (played by Jet Li) was betrayed by his colleagues, and all his troops perished. Surviving by pretending to be dead, the eldest brother encountered Lian Sheng (played by Xu Jing Lei), who had run away from home. After spending a night together for warmth, Lian Sheng left without a word. The eldest brother was found on the streets by the third brother (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro) and taken back to the village, where he discovered that Lian Sheng was actually the wife of Er Hu (played by Andy Lau). Farmers tormented by poverty and hunger, led by the honest Er Hu and loyal third brother, robbed official treasure, resulting in retribution from the government at midnight.
