During the silkworm flower season of a certain year in the Republic of China, the small town of Shuanghe by the Grand Canal in Jiangnan welcomed the annual Silkworm Flower Festival. The festival, organized by Lu Si, who runs the Tianchan Palace in Shanghai, aimed to revitalize the Southern School of Peking Opera and discover talents in martial arts roles. The Silkworm Flower Festival attracts various opera troupes every year, and the genuine martial arts performances not only satisfy the cravings of local opera fans but also elevate Lu Si's reputation along the banks of the canal.
However, at last year's festival, the star of the Qi family troupe, Yu Die, mysteriously drowned in the canal flowing through Shuanghe. Ju Shaosheng, a martial artist from the Jing School, had previously performed with Yu Die in Shanghai, and her death prompted him to investigate the murky waters of Shuanghe. When Ju Shaosheng appeared in Shuanghe under the pretext of treating his back injury, the Qi and Hua family troupes, who participated in the festival every year, arrived at the Shuanghe dock.
Without Yu Die, the Qi family troupe began to decline, and their leader, Boss Qi, was compelled to visit Hua Erlang, the leader of the Hua family troupe, seeking to relinquish some roles. The deceased Yu Die was Hua Erlang's senior apprentice. Despite receiving silver from Boss Qi, Hua Erlang refused to take back the "sword" that had already been unsheathed. With Hua Erlang unwilling to offer a high platform, Boss Qi had no choice but to turn to Ju Shaosheng, hoping that the successor of the Northern School could take Li Yunlai as a disciple.
Ju Shaosheng had no precedent for accepting disciples, but upon seeing the valiant and impressive Li Yunlai, he decided to lend a hand to the Qi family troupe. Li Yunlai's grandfather was once the lover of the renowned matriarch of Shuanghe, Madam Zhang, in her youth. Because of this connection, the Qi family troupe received special favor from Madam Zhang, and her granddaughter-in-law, Gu Yanqiu, invited them to stay at her home, bringing life and drumbeats to an otherwise quiet residence.
With the affection of Madam Zhang and Gu Yanqiu, along with the support of Ju Shaosheng, the Qi family’s martial artist Li Yunlai took to the stage. Although his spirit and skills weren’t a match for Hua Erlang, he still garnered loud applause with a performance of "The Monkey King Conquers the Heavens". However, Lu Si's evil deeds led to the "accidental" death of Boss Qi. With the deaths of Yu Die and Boss Qi over two consecutive Silkworm Flower Festivals, Ju Shaosheng resolved to uncover the truth and bring Lu Si to justice.
Ju Shaosheng represented the Qi family troupe on stage to compete against Hua Erlang. In a turn of events during their performance, Hua Erlang, driven by revenge for his deceased senior, almost managed to kill Lu Si. However, Lu Si used underhanded tactics, resulting in Hua Erlang meeting his end, while Ju Shaosheng left Shuanghe with solid evidence that linked Lu Si to the murders. After recovering from his injuries, Ju Shaosheng emerged as a master of the pear garden; following the liberation, the theater tyrant Lu Si was suppressed by the people’s government, and the opera troupes that had existed since the Qing Dynasty left behind a legacy of Southern School martial arts still passed down to this day.
