The CIA has received intelligence indicating that there is a traitor among their agents, who is preparing to sell the list of CIA operatives stationed in Eastern Europe to a foreign espionage organization. Under the leadership of agent chief Jim (played by Jon Voight), a group of agents that includes Ethan (played by Tom Cruise) heads to their designated meeting place. Unexpectedly, when they arrive as planned, they fall into an ambush, and apart from Ethan and Jim's wife Claire, the other team members are killed. At this moment, Ethan's account inexplicably receives an additional $120,000, making him the prime suspect of being the mole. With no other choice, Ethan must rely on his own strength to infiltrate the danger zone and identify the traitor among them. After contacting Max, the liaison of the foreign spy organization, he agrees to help Max steal the CIA spy list in exchange for the name of the mole within the CIA.
