Manami Honjo's first leading role in a movie. Directed by Ichiro Isozaki, known for "Ganbatte Ikimasshoi." The original work is a novel of the same name by Naoki Prize-winning author Fumio Yamamoto. Tetsuo (Hiroshi Tamaki), a university student working part-time at a supermarket, has a crush on a young woman, Satoru (Manami Honjo), whom he occasionally sees. One day, their relationship begins when Satoru collapses from anemia in front of Tetsuo. Living with her mother (Mariko Fujin), and younger sister (Maho Nonami) in a house on a hill, Satoru is shy and quiet, yet harbors unstable emotions, such as inviting Tetsuo to a hotel during a drive. The source of her instability lies in the repressive life under her strict mother.
In this film, where Manami Honjo, typically bright on TV, takes on the role of a woman hiding darkness in her heart, she challenges subtle psychological expressions. Mariko Fujin plays the intimidating mother, evoking the image of Hitchcock's "Psycho," and her scene where she reveals her femininity in front of Tetsuo is incredibly powerful. Meanwhile, Maho Nonami's sister, being the only bright and straightforward character, casts a ray of light on the otherwise somber mood of the film, providing a form of salvation. The theme song is "In the Sea of Thorns" by Chihiro Onitsuka. (Masahiko Saito)
