The story is set in the later stages of the Pacific War, where the Japanese Navy suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Midway; four aircraft carriers of the First Mobile Fleet were sunk; Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander of the Combined Fleet, was killed, and the Japanese garrison troops on various islands in the Pacific were gradually wiped out, putting the Japanese Navy in a severely unfavorable situation. In the spring of Showa 19 (1944), a special youth soldier named Kamio, filled with admiration for the Yamato, boarded the deck of the battleship "Yamato," which was then a symbol of hope for the Japanese people and military. Kamio endured the harsh training on board and soon faced his first real battle—the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In this naval battle, the Combined Fleet had essentially collapsed. Confronted with the brutal battle ahead, the Yamato and its crew set sail with determination to defend their homeland, ready for their final tragic showdown.
