Adapted from Rüdiger Bertram's novel of the same name, inspired by real events that occurred during World War II in 1940. It tells the story of Ludwig, a German journalist fleeing the Nazis, who, along with his 12-year-old son, Rolf, is trying to reach New York to reunite with his wife. Along the way, the father is arrested, and Rolf teams up with a Spanish girl named Nuria to traverse the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France in search of family.
