Violence and the order of life, how do different people in various situations navigate the blurred lines between right and wrong? Tom (played by Viggo Mortensen) is the most ordinary head of a household in a small town, running a small shop for a living. One day, he encounters intruders trying to rob him; in order to save his colleague's life, Tom bravely takes down the assailants, and his heroic act becomes a hot topic among the townsfolk. The media coverage of the incident brutally exposes the Tom family to the public eye. Whether this incident changes the original Tom or brings him back to his true self is unclear—because Tom's past gradually resurfaces. The mob boss comes calling with his men, which means Tom can no longer hide his previous close encounters with violence. His wife Eddie (played by Maria Bello) becomes very angry upon learning her husband's secret; worse still, Tom sees the shadow of violence gradually enveloping his son. Once again, violence completely infiltrates their previously peaceful life.
