The story takes place in England in 1694, where the wealthy Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) hires the brilliant painter Neville (Anthony Higgins) to complete twelve paintings for Compton Anus Manor as per their contract. During this time, an illicit relationship develops between Neville and Mrs. Herbert. Tarmac (Hugh Fraser) is Mrs. Herbert's son-in-law, who has always wanted to obtain the grand and luxurious Compton Anus Manor. However, his wife, Mrs. Tarmac (Anne-Louise Lambert), has been unable to bear children, making Neville, who roams the manor, a thorn in Tarmac's side. Soon, Mrs. Tarmac's name is added to Neville's list of lovers, unaware that he has fallen into a long-planned conspiracy.
