A man and a dog experiencing life alongside the changing seasons throughout the year. Ami, a writer who has lived alone for many years in the mountains of Karuizawa, sources his meals from nature, with fruits, mushrooms, wild grasses, and bamboo shoots all making it to his table. His editor and girlfriend, Chizuko, occasionally visits him from Tokyo. Cooking seasonal ingredients together and then savoring the dishes with a loved one is the most delightful experience. From the beginning of spring to the winter solstice, Ami receives the foods nurtured by nature with gratitude, similar to cherishing the feeling of living in the moment. Through his life in the mountains, Ami gradually learns the essence of life. Whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or writing, he diligently attends to his daily tasks, yet he still cannot decide how to handle the ashes of his wife who passed away 13 years ago… This film is adapted from the culinary essay "Days of Eating Dirt" by writer Tsukiyama Ben. Starring the talented Kenji Sawada and Takako Matsu, the dishes in the film come from the culinary master Yoshiharu Doi. This is a movie that depicts the taste of life through seasonal cuisine. The Japanese tea ceremony and flower arrangement blend the intangible Zen into tangible objects, and this work integrates Zen into everyday cooking. Whether it’s cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, brewing, or writing, whatever you do should be done wholeheartedly, living in the moment; that is Zen.
