"My mother taught me to speak, why must I be silent?" The death of her grandmother, the malfunctioning elevator in their building, and the chaotic scene of carrying the coffin out to the street encapsulate the daily life of Black girl Habib. The newly elected white doctor neighbor, who "righteously" takes in Syrian refugees, turns a blind eye to the hardships of the long-established Black community and ruthlessly promotes forced evacuation orders, forcing Habib to take to the streets in protest during what should be a universally joyful Christmas. As oppression becomes increasingly unreasonable, could the residents' anger spiral out of control? Following his Cannes-winning work "Tears of the Lonely City," director Ladj Ly once again delves into the roots of class and racial conflict in French society: it's not about scarcity but inequality, not about poverty but insecurity, indeed.
