Professional hitman Jack Carter has been operating alone in New York, with little contact with his brother who lives in Los Angeles. He returns home to attend his brother’s funeral and, feeling guilty, soon senses that there’s more to his brother's death. Through investigation, he discovers that several people connected to his brother are suspicious, including his attractive sister-in-law, her daughter, his brother's boss, a mysterious woman, and a millionaire. In the end, the killer is brought to justice, but Carter pays for it with his own life.
