Carter (played by Adam Brody) is struggling to make progress in his Hollywood career and has yet to find a lifelong partner. After his beautiful girlfriend Sofia (played by Elena Anaya) confronts him to break up, Carter hits rock bottom emotionally. He leaves Los Angeles and goes to his grandmother's house in Michigan, where the vast countryside and blue skies allow him to start a calm life. His grandmother is a neurotic elder, reclusive and stubborn, with little regard for others; additionally, the neighbor's mother, Sarah (played by Meg Ryan), and her two daughters provide Carter with a different perspective on life: Sarah endures her husband's affair while compromising for the sake of the family; the eldest daughter is in her teenage years, moody and irritable; the youngest daughter, only 11, is precociously caught up in the world of emotions. Carter enters the lives of these women, witnessing them navigate the seasons of life, and finds a sense of redemption in his heart.
