Song Shijie (played by Stephen Chow) is a famous lawyer in the Qing Dynasty. His exceptional eloquence and skills allow him to boldly criticize the high-ranking officials and seek justice for many people. Although he is dissatisfied with the corruption and darkness of the officialdom at that time, he still takes a considerable amount of bribes, some of which are ill-gotten gains, leading to retribution on his own sons, of whom more than ten could not survive. His wife (Anita Mui) insists that he stop practicing law for the sake of their unborn child, and despite his reluctance, he agrees to her request. When his wife encounters a widow (played by Ng Kar-lai) full of grievances, out of sympathy for her situation, she insists her husband Song Shijie represents the widow in court, forcing him to return to the legal arena.
