Mike (Paul Giamatti) is a small-town lawyer who, while helping an elderly man with dementia named Leo (Burt Young), accidentally becomes Leo's guardian. Caring for the old man is not enough; Leo's grandson Kyle (Alex Shaffer) unexpectedly arrives, seeking refuge with his grandfather due to conflicts with his drug-addicted mother. Mike's family agrees to take him in and arranges for him to attend a nearby high school. Mike also serves as the wrestling coach at that high school and soon discovers that Kyle is a very talented wrestler. The situation seems to be "win-win": Leo and Kyle receive care in their lives, Mike gains a key team member, and he receives a monthly stipend of $1,500 for guardianship to help with household expenses. However, the balance is disrupted with the arrival of Kyle's mother, Cindy (Melanie Lynskey), who seeks to regain guardianship of Leo. With the mother back, Kyle has no reason to continue living with Mike's family, but only Kyle understands that his mother has no love for him or his grandfather; her sole motive is the grandfather's money...
