Sergeant Will Montgomery (played by Ben Foster) has just returned home injured after completing his deployment in Iraq. Although he spends a pleasant day with his girlfriend Kelly (played by Jena Malone) after being discharged, they ultimately break up. Due to remaining service time, Will is assigned to the "casualty notification" service center, under Captain Tony Stone (played by Woody Harrelson). During the casualty notification missions, Will and Tony encounter various situations, including being physically assaulted and verbally abused by emotional relatives. When conveying the news of her husband's death to Olivia Peterson (played by Samantha Morton), Will worries that the strong exterior of the widow will not be able to bear the loss. Afterwards, he repeatedly offers help to her and her child, leading to a growing fondness between them. However, Tony is unhappy with Will's repeated violations of the "casualty notification code of conduct." After a confrontation, both finally express the deep pain they have long suppressed. The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson) and Best Original Screenplay, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson), and won the Peace Film Award, the Silver Bear for Best Script at the Berlin Film Festival, and was nominated for the Golden Bear for Best Film.
