Sergeant Will Montgomery (played by Ben Foster) has just returned home injured after completing his deployment in Iraq. Although he spends a pleasant day with his girlfriend Kelly (played by Jena Malone) after being discharged, they ultimately break up. Due to remaining service time, Will is assigned to the "casualty notification" service center, under Captain Tony Stone (played by Woody Harrelson).
