Sebastian (played by Stéphane Rousseau), who has grown distant from his father, suddenly receives a call from his mother Louise. His father, the womanizing history professor Rémi, is now lying in a hospital, near death. After some hesitation, Sebastian rushes back to Montreal to accompany his father in his final days. The years of estrangement and differing lifestyles lead to intense arguments between the father and son from the very beginning, but Sebastian still tries every way possible to ensure his father passes away peacefully. He moves his father to a more comfortable hospital room, gathers his father's old friends, and even buys heroin for his father's pain relief. Throughout this time together, their relationship undergoes subtle changes. The film is praised as a "farewell ceremony of life," sweeping various film awards with its simple yet poignant imagery and delicate emotions. In 2003, it won Best Screenplay and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or; in 2004, it received the César Awards for Best Director, Best Film, and Best Screenplay; and in 2004, it was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
