1700 nautical miles from the Sunda Strait, a man (played by Robert Redford) sailing alone across the Indian Ocean murmurs in despair, as everything seems to be lost here. Eight days ago, still in a deep sleep, he faced a series of misfortunes: first, his sailing boat collided with a shipping container that had fallen into the sea, then the cabin began to take on water uncontrollably, with no way to repair it. The subsequent misfortunes swept away all his hope like a storm at sea. Navigation and radio equipment failed, leaving him cut off from all means of communication; torrential rain and monstrous waves relentlessly assaulted the ship he depended on for survival. This once resourceful old sailor had no choice but to abandon the ship to survive, while sharks circled around him, eyeing him as their next meal. Moreover, extreme hunger constantly tormented his stomach, wearing down his will. The footsteps of death closed in on him, step by step, until the end. This film was nominated for Best Sound Editing at the 86th Academy Awards in 2014 and received nominations for Best Original Score and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama at the 71st Golden Globe Awards in 2014.
