The fund manager of a securities company, Seok-woo (played by Gong Yoo), is polished and capable, but also a profit-driven opportunist. His wife has severed ties with him over this, and their daughter Soo-an (played by Kim Soo-an) grows increasingly disappointed with such a selfish father, deciding to go to Busan to live with her mother. On Soo-an's birthday, Seok-woo takes time off to accompany his daughter on the express train to Busan. Meanwhile, suspicious riot incidents occur throughout the city. The government's attempts to cover up the rampant zombie outbreak cannot disguise the truth, and even the oblivious train passengers are plunged into a hell of panic and despair with the arrival of unexpected guests. At the moment the train sets off, an infected individual rushes into the carriage, quickly turning into a zombie and beginning a bloody massacre against the healthy people around. Before long, the number of zombies explosively multiplies. Seok-woo and the surviving passengers are forced to fight for survival in the cramped space. The long journey to Busan is fraught with peril, and every survivor's humanity is put to the test in times of crisis…
