French gentleman Mardieu (Fernando Rey) is on a train returning to Spain, where he encounters a mother-daughter pair, a dwarf, and a friend of his brother. Just before the train departs, a woman (Molina Angela) rushes in with her luggage, and Mardieu throws a bucket of cold water on her, which confuses everyone. Back in the carriage, Mardieu recounts his experience: the woman is Conchita (Carole Bouquet), the Spanish maid of his brother's family. Her beauty deeply captivates Mardieu. To express his love, he helps Conchita and her mother out of financial difficulties, then proposes that she become his lover. Although Conchita feigns reluctance, she ultimately does not consent to his sexual advances. This frustrates him greatly, especially when he discovers this woman, who claims to be a virgin, has another lover, causing him to erupt in anger... In this film, Spanish director Buñuel uses two actresses to play the same role, which is quite symbolic.
