The town of Hamawaki, once prosperous as a coal mining area, is now suffering from a declining population. The Hamawaki branch line is also set to be abandoned and cease operations. Sato Otomatsu (played by Ken Takakura) is the station master at Hamawaki Station on Hokkaido's local branch line, and he is responsible for ticket checking, using a small flag to direct train arrivals and departures, cleaning the station's interior, and other miscellaneous tasks every day. Old colleague Sugiura Senji visits Hamawaki Station, hoping to persuade Otomatsu to join him at a resort after retirement, but Otomatsu firmly declines, believing he must accompany the railway with his life. Due to his dedication to his job, his daughter Yukiko, who died 17 years ago, and his wife Shizue (played by Shinobu Otake), who passed away two years ago, are left to face death alone, and Otomatsu endures the pain in his heart.
