In 1812, Napoleon's army controlled most of the European countries. Among the few unconquered nations, Russia intended to unite with Austria for a desperate resistance. The ambitious Russian officer Prince Andrei (played by Mel Ferrer) embodies this spirit. However, Andrei's close friend Prince Pierre (played by Henry Fonda) is indifferent to the war. He becomes the heir to his father's estate before his death, marries the noblewoman Helen (played by Anita Ekberg), but soon discovers their incompatible personalities and they separate shortly after marriage. Following a failed battle, Andrei returns home to visit his wife, who dies in childbirth. A few months later, Pierre goes hunting with the Rostov family and invites Andrei along. Andrei instantly falls in love with the Countess's daughter Natasha (played by Audrey Hepburn). Soon, Natasha accepts Andrei's proposal, but Andrei quickly returns to the army. Helen's brother Anatole takes advantage of the situation and wins Natasha's love, persuading her to elope with him. As the Russo-French War begins, Natasha encounters the severely injured Andrei, who forgives her betrayal before dying. After the war ends, Pierre returns to Moscow and unites with Natasha.
