Yang Hanyun and her uncle make a living running an inn outside the pass and have inherited excellent martial arts skills from her uncle. One day, she visits a small town to purchase goods and encounters a martial arts master known as the "Three Heroes of the Linked Rings" who provokes her. Fortunately, a young man named Wang Jianxin comes to her aid. At this moment, Yang Hanyun suddenly discovers that many martial arts experts have gathered in the town searching for someone who, like her, uses a whip as a weapon—Shadow Divine Whip Fang Chengtian.
It is widely rumored in the martial world that 15 years ago, Fang Chengtian robbed a large shipment of priceless jewels from a courier company, leading to the destruction of the family of Yang Zongbiao, the head of the guards at that time. Now, various masters are still searching for Fang Chengtian's whereabouts; they want to kill him and reclaim the jewels.
Yang Hanyun returns to the inn and meets Hong Dapeng, who is also searching for Fang Chengtian. This man was once sworn brothers with Fang Chengtian, but now he is the leader in the hunt for him. Yang Hanyun’s uncle confronts Fang Chengtian, at which point Yang Hanyun discovers that her uncle is the very Fang Chengtian that the martial world has been searching for these past 15 years.
Fang Chengtian instructs Yang Hanyun to return to the town first. She finds Wang Jianxin, and they develop feelings for each other. Wang Jianxin reveals to Yang Hanyun that he is actually the nephew of Yang Zongbiao; although he fell in love with Yang Hanyun at first sight, he has not forgotten about avenging his uncle. Wang Jianxin and Yang Hanyun break through the siege of multiple masters and return to the inn. Fang Chengtian tells them the real story...
Years ago, Fang Chengtian was invited by Hong Dapeng to assist Yang Zongbiao in delivering a shipment but encountered a masked man using a whip who indiscriminately killed innocents at Yang Zongbiao's residence the night before their departure. The masked man stole the jewels, while Fang Chengtian saved Yang Zongbiao’s daughter. To protect the child, Fang Chengtian endured various suspicions from the martial world and fled with her outside the pass. That girl was none other than Yang Hanyun today.
All truths are revealed. From various inconsistencies, it appears that the masked man was Hong Dapeng. He stole the jewels and framed Fang Chengtian, inciting others in the martial world to pursue vengeance. Before the watchful eyes of the martial experts, Yang Hanyun personally kills Hong Dapeng, avenging her parents' deep-seated grievances. Fang Chengtian finally clears his name and regains his normal life after many years.
Highlights: This classic martial arts film produced by Shaw Brothers Studio, directed by Lo Wei, is adapted from Ni Kuang's novel "Return of the Light" and tells a tale of martial world grudges in a reverse narrative style. The film stars the renowned Cheng Pei-pei, nicknamed "Golden Swallow," and this was also her last martial arts film before marriage. The director also invited Cheng Pei-pei's best partner, Yuen Wah, known as the "Great Drunken Hero," to co-star with her. The fight scenes in the film are realistic and thrilling, making it a rare gem during the heyday of martial arts films in the 70s and 80s.
