Danny (Daniel Day-Lewis) was once a passionate revolutionary youth who was arrested for joining the Irish Republican Army, enduring a grueling fourteen years in prison. After finally getting through the long period of unfreedom, Danny decides to turn over a new leaf and live as a low-profile ordinary person. After his release, Danny returns to his old profession as a boxing coach, training a group of young people who, like him, are passionate about the sport. An unexpected event brings Danny back together with his former lover, Maggie (Emily Watson), who is now raising her fourteen-year-old son, Lynn, all on her own, struggling through difficult times.
