Deep in the forest lies a sanatorium specifically for severely disabled individuals. Once a renowned author who received literary awards, Yoshiko (played by Rie Miyazawa) has been unable to write anything for a long time and reluctantly comes to work here. Along with her husband Shohei (played by Ryo Kase), they carefully manage their married life after an accident. The other staff at the sanatorium do not regard the disabled as human beings, and even entertain themselves by abusing the patients. Yoshiko, being new, witnesses this but when she reports these inhumane acts to her superiors, her complaints fall on deaf ears. Only her young colleague, also named Yoko (played by Fumi Nikaido), and Asei (played by Yuto Isomura) are willing to listen to her. However, Asei, feeling indignant about society, gradually sees his growing sense of justice and mission twist under the increasingly vicious and brutal behavior of other colleagues, ultimately leading to an event that shakes Japanese society.
