In an unnamed diamond mining area in South America, a dictatorial army intends to close the mine, facing armed resistance from the workers. French miner Castin (played by Charles Vanel) falls in love with the town's prostitute, Jin (played by Simone Signoret). After being accused of leading the rebellion, he decides to escape by boat at night with Jin and his only daughter, Maria (played by Michèle Girardon). The town’s priest, Father Lissardi (played by Michel Piccoli), is misunderstood while trying to protect Castin and has to flee with them. That night, explorer Chuck (played by Georges Machal), who had blown up the military command during the uprising, also arrives at the boat and forces everyone to abandon ship halfway and trek through the tropical rainforest to escape to Brazil. The group of five struggles through the mosquito-infested rainforest, suffering from hunger, getting lost, with some hallucinating and others going mad from despair. Will they manage to escape from peril and succeed in their flight? This film is the second part of a trilogy produced in collaboration with France after Luis Buñuel's exile period ended and his return to European cinema.
